What Makes a Leader of Exceptional Teams?
I have been questioning the value of team captains lately. Logistically it’s great to have one to help with off-season training and other things. However, I am not sure if they should be called “captain”, in order to inspire the troops to join the weight room.
What happens when leadership is not in the lower classes What happens when a sophomore leader isn’t on the team with four seniors? That could create a chaotic team dynamic.

Three qualities captains should possess in order to lead effectively
A clear strategic focus. This may sound obvious, but I’ve had to coach teams where the captains weren’t sure what was important. If the captains think that jumping when you say it is more important than helping the team achieve its goals, then your focus is off.
Open to new suggestions. They’ve been on many different teams, had many coaches and been led by many captains by their respective coaches before they get to the collegiate level. Even though a player might not be a captain, they may have great ideas. Great captains listen to their players and might even take up a suggestion from them.
Create strong bonds. These captains are the best I’ve ever seen. They mobilise the team and keep them focused on their goals. They stop internal and external fighting and squash petty issues before I even notice it. They allow the team to have fun and bond outside of practice so that they can get to know each others. Great captains turn the team into a close-knit family.\
